Start-up notification - private traders

In colloquial Finnish, private traders are often called "toiminimiyrittäjä", “toiminimi", “tmi", or “yksityisliike". On the Finnish Tax Administration website, they are also called self-employed, and “liikkeenharjoittaja" or “ammatinharjoittaja" in Finnish.

How to file your notification with the Trade Register and the Finnish Tax Administration online

  1. File a start-up notification with the Trade Register in our online service at ytj.fi. You will receive a Business ID.
  2. File a notification of changes in our online service at ytj.fi to file your company with the VAT Register, Prepayment Register, and Employer Register at the Finnish Tax Administration.

You can file your notification in our online service at ytj.fi if

  • you are at least 18 years old
  • you have a Finnish personal identity code
  • you have your own personal internet banking codes or mobile certificate or an electronic identity card (HST card).

Notification of changes to the Finnish Tax Administration

Once you have filed your notification with the Trade Register and received your Business ID, use the online notification of changes to register your company with the VAT Register, Prepayment Register, and Employer Register at the Finnish Tax Administration. You can also provide other necessary information with the notification. In addition, private traders pay advance tax on their income. You can apply for advance tax.

Start-up notification using our paper forms

If you file a start-up notification using our paper forms, fill in form Y3 and personal data form. Read our instructions for filling in the start-up notification.

Save the form to your computer in order to fill it in. Fill in the forms on your computer, then print them at A4 size, and send them to the address given on the form.

When you file your notification with the PRH Trade Register on a paper form, you must pay the handling fee in advance. Enclose the receipt with the notification.

If you already have a Business ID and you want to file your company with the Trade Register, do not use the start-up notification – instead, file a notification of changes using form Y6 and the personal data form. Give your existing Business ID on the form. In form Y6, fill in your basic details and the details that will be filed with the Trade Register: company name, place of registered office, address, and line of business. Read the instructions for the notification of changes.
